I have lived in Montana and Idaho for all my life and I have seen a few antlered deer that in the fall are still in the velvet. After real close inspection, I found that these animals have been casterated by some land owner. Is this common for a deer not to rub his antlers to remove the velvet after such a casteration?

I have had some success calling coyote during midday. Only in the woods and using the injured rabbit call.

Do coyotes return calls during the midday..say 11:am until 3 pm? If so, what is the best way to call them up during the midday?

Put some vasaline on cotton balls, rub it in well and store in a zip lock plastic bag. Very light weight and won't take up room. This will start a fire every time and it burns hot. No more stinky or hard to use fire starters for me.

Coyote hunting is changing. They are getting smarter and harder to call in. We have started driving these wise dogs. Pushing to some standers has produced many more kills. We have even had some luck without snow, but after a new snow you know where they are. Give it a try.

Lightly rattle to get the big bucks out of their beds. Hard heavy rattling early in the pre rut does not work as well as light tinking of the horns. Just a note to help the hunters.

When hunting (or storing) rifles and handguns, place small amount of vaseline in the muzzle to seal out moisture, debris, etc. It will NOT affect accuracy. No more rubber bands and plastic wrap, etc.

Now is the time to back track a deer to see where they bed and what they are eating this time of year. You can learn more about the herd in your hunting area. You might even find out if the big guy is still around. Good Luck.

Movement more than any other thing will make ducks flair. Don't move until you pull up to shoot. You will find closer shots and more dead ducks if you remain motionless.

If you use a little soap or silicone on your practice arrows, removing them from a target will be a piece of cake. I have been doing this for years and when I show this to someone they wonder why I never told them before.

To make ticks turn loose, especially for young sportsman/ladies dab a little Camphophenique (for cold sores) and they'll back right off. Fishy Smell wash those hands with white vinegar, your spouse will love you for it.

MIDDAY MAGIC!!! - I have realized that you have a far better chance at a gobbler in the middle of the morning rather than at first light. Turkeys are boggled by the rush of all the hunters trying to take a bird off the roost. By mid-morning the toms have left the hens. The hens have gone to nest and the toms are very eager to find a new hen. They are prone to answer to any type of hen call.

I have found that fishing line rots very quickly when it is left out in the sun. I found that by storing my rods in a place that is out of the sun I don't break line or lose as many lures. You sure don't need to find out your line is rotten when you got that big one on.

I found that working with my boys on gun handling, we had a better understanding of range of motion of where they could shoot in a real setting. We dry ran the events using a golf ball, and both boys in an attempt to cover the ball were out of there safe shooting area. It took some time and the results were understood by both boys.

Check your bow over for loose bolts, worn strings and if you use a rubber tube to aline your peep look this over as they rot fairly quickly. I have see many shooters at 3D shoots come out of the woods to repair this tube.

Try using a longer leader for walleyes. I found that 6 to 8 foot leaders produce more fish than your traditional 3 to 4 foot leaders. You have to be willing to try various set ups if you are going to be successful.

If your finger nails and surrounding skin is cracked from being dry, try using chap stik when your in the field. This will temporarily soften the skin and stop the pain.

When jigging for panfish I use 2 lines and let 1 line sit still while jigging the other line. The fish will hit the still line before the active line. Try this you may like it.

When duck or goose hunting use a gun oil like REM OIL. This can prevent sticky actions and make your trip gun trouble free.

Stop spending money on cleaning stuff for your guns...brake parts cleaner from the AutoZone, etc. works fine and you can buy 4 big cans for what you would spend for a can of bore scrubber, it runs moisture and dries quickly. Mobile One synthetic spray lubricant is an outstanding gun oil, you get like 3 or 4 times more than Rem Oil...don't like spray cans O.K. take one quart straight 5w (weight) oil, one quart transmission fluid, and one pint STP additive, mix really well and you have like a 3 year supply of one of the best gun ouls you can find anywhere..you can find 5w oil at a co-op or farmers market - the above mix was discovered b a group of Army competition shooters, it works great. P.S. use brake cleaner to flush your trigger group from you pump shotgun etc. then spray down with Mobile One stc. and vlow excess oil out with a compressor hose or leave upside down on a pile of paper towels overnight, the Mobile One is thin enough that it will run out/wick into the paper towels if left, now your trigger group is protected but will not gum up like an over oiled set...works great for cleaning/oiling magazines also..P.S. - there is NO substitute for a good bore brush and bore cleaner but in the field a pull-through cleaner (the kind w/imbedded brush) and some break free or other oil (3 in one even) will keep your accuracy and life of your barrel long!! see ya....Happy hunting--FACTOR

Try using marshmellows when bear hunting to get the bear exactly where you want it. They love these little treats and will go all around the area to find them.

If you are hunting in farm country try stepping in cow poop as this will cover your scent. Deer have been smelling this and it will help you cover your scent

When deer hunting new land wait to place fixed stands until you hunt a few times. This will allow you to really see where to place a fixed stand and save you from being in the wrong place, and save the effort of building a new stand in the right spot.

When turkey hunting don't be afraid to move. I have found that when its windy you have to move to get where the birds can hear the call. This has resulted in more birds seen and taken then when I tried to make them come to me. Good Luck and safety first always.

Even if your kids don't want to clean game, have them watch you do it so there is a lesson in every event. A lot of kids will do it after watching someone else do it. This also promotes their interest in the sport.

Try not using a bobber on sun fish. Jig the same as you would with a bobber but hold the jig off the bottom. When the fish bite you can feel it and set the hook. It works great. Dan

A red bead in front of your hook along with a spinner has been the hot item for summer walleyes. I fished with a guy who used this setup and it took me awhile to give in, but when I rigged up with this setup I started catching the infamous walleyes. He caught 12 fish before I switched and I never did catch up to him. Good Luck Fishing
